Gerald Folsom was born in Royalton, Vermont, on 5 October 1921. After graduating from high school he went to work managing a grocery store. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in July 1942, as soon that organization dropped the college requirement for their Aviation Cadet program. He received his training in 1943 and was assigned as pilot of a B-24 Liberator the following year.
